4th Annual Life Sciences and Society Symposium at MU

Biofuels: Initiatives, Challenges & Opportunities

The 4th Annual Life Sciences and Society Symposium brings internationally recognized experts to the MU Campus to examine the science behind biofuels and associated social, cultural and economic implications on the state and global communities.

Rationale

The continuing reliance of the global community on fossil fuels has been a central policy issue in recent years. Environmental concerns over greenhouse gases, finite oil supplies outstripped by growing demand from emerging economies, increasing instability in oil producing states, and record oil prices are some of the main drivers of the public debate.

Against this backdrop, biofuels have been heralded for their promise of improved air quality, enhanced energy security and sustainability, as well as for a more equitable agricultural policy. Along the way, significant investments have been made in research and commercialization.

Nonetheless, questions remain on the ability of biofuels to deliver on their social promise. What role can technology play in overcoming current production limits and in increasing efficiency? What are the relative economic and environmental impacts of biofuels? What regulatory policies and legislative initiatives are needed to advance the technical paths that benefit society?
